PHOTOGRAPHS OF OLD SAVANNAH
|
Savannah, Georgia, named after the surrounding grasslands, was founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe. With military precision, Oglethorpe designed the city making Savannah one of the first planned cities in the nation. Savannahs port grew in importance as an exporter of lumber and cotton The naval blockade by Federal Troops during the Civil War made trade with the outside world all but impossible and General Sherman occupied the surrendered city in 1864. |

After a difficult time during reconstruction, Savannah began to regain its prominence as a port city with the export of rosin, lumber and cotton. By the 1920s the boll weevil destroyed cotton production, again forcing Savannah into decline. During the succeeding decades there were many hard fought battles to preserve Savannahs historic squares and elegant architecture. In 1966, the downtown area was designated a registered historic landmark (with an area of over 2 square miles, this is the largest historic district in the United States). Many people today enjoy the charming tree shaded squares and beautiful architectural jewels of Savannah, Georgia. |
